FANATICS returns to OYO for his full-fledged label debut with FROM MY NIGHTMARE, a release that follows his initial appearance on the label’s Secret Stash compilation that released at the start of 2021. A Belgian producer with a penchant for raucous Jump-Up sounds, FANATICS’ previous releases span labels including Cre8dnb, Down2Earth, Gradient Records, and more. Now, the rising artist returns to OYO with four floor-tearing tracks born of the sonic devotion that his name suggests.
The EP is opened by a devious display of BLACK MAGIC, a track in which murky basses intermingle with malevolent vocal samples for the creation of a dastardly audio concoction. The titular FROM MY NIGHTMARE follows at a more urgent pace, fleeing from the coming horror of the 4 x 4 percussive pattern that stomps after it amidst an eerily empty atmosphere. From here the EP runs into the NETHERWORLD, a place in which distorted frequencies fold back in upon each other and are split by razor-sharp percussion in a uniquely hellish sequence. ZEALOT then closes the EP, echoing the fervor of FANATICS’ own name within a landscape swept by electrified pads that ionize the edges of the bassline that follows as it rends the track in two.
With FROM MY NIGHTMARE, FANATICS demonstrates the breadth of his commitment to the Jump-Up sound with tracks that range from subtle funk to over-the-top audio destruction. With such sonic creations, FANATICS finds a welcome home amidst the minds of OYO, adding another like-minded voice to the label’s own sonic cacophony.
