Once again transcending borders in its search for new recruits, British drum and bass behemoth Cause4Concern Limited has tapped Florida record producer Antares for its next release, a four-track EP titled Into the Dust which marks his debut on the label.
Armed with an expansive catalogue of recent works spanning the likes of Locked Up Music, Danger Chamber Digital and even releases on wax via London label Ballpark Recordings, Josh Stotz has come into his own as a beatmaker since adopting the Antares moniker, which rose from the ashes of his former project, Illicit, in early 2019. Leaning into cutting-edge cinematic sound design techniques while harking back to jungle’s definitive years, he’s quickly earned endorsements from authoritative voices in the scene including online platform DnB Dojo and Rebel Music resident DJs Taelimb and Kolectiv, and his latest project gels with the C4C roster in a way that makes his signing to the label a no-brainer.
Into the Dust introduces itself with “On the Winds of Rebellion (Amen Variant)”, a brand-new incarnation of a track first teased via the stateside creative’s SoundCloud. Mesmerising from the outset, this ambient excursion is kicked off with swelling, phased synths and whistling foley sounds, which segue into dreamy breakbeat passages that build to a head during the song’s final throes. “No Right”, which follows, is an eerily brooding affair, its horror-inspired spoken-word excerpts giving way to devilish reeses, frenzied drums and decorative shrieks. “Speak for the Dead” falls somewhere between its two predecessors stylistically, marrying sombre pads with gnarled basslines, while “Into the Dust”, the EP’s stunning title track, is constructed around a surreal sci-fi narrative, its clattering percussion and sprawling, otherworldly atmospherics sure to transport listeners to another mental realm as the track progresses. Strap in and enjoy the ride.
The Into the Dust EP is available exclusively via Beatport and Spotify from 28 January, and will be made available via a full range of digital outlets from 11 February 2021
