We can’t talk about conservation without looking at the past casualties of human actions, like the now-extinct Tasmanian tiger, or thylacine. With a dog-like appearance and striking tiger stripes, thylacines were the largest carnivores in the marsupial family and actually not related to tigers or wolves at all. They had huge teeth-filled mouths and powerful jaws that could stretch open 120 degrees, and were widely feared by European arrivals to Tasmania in the 1800s. The settlers brought sheep and cattle and believed thylacines attacked them (despite a lack of evidence). In reality thylacines were shy and mostly hunted small prey like birds and rodents. Bounties were offered for dead thylacines and thousands were killed. Finally in 1936, 59 days after the thylacine was officially declared a ‘protected species’, the last thylacine died in a zoo after being accidentally locked out in freezing temperatures overnight. No other living thylacines were ever found. It’s truly tragic that these unique animals were wiped out.
