Kicking off their 2021 release schedule with flair, Druid Records are back with “Holding On”, a euphoric liquid drum & bass collaboration between Austrian production team Cranium and Brighton singer-songwriter Sammie Hall.
While Cranium are best known for carving out grittier neurofunk soundscapes with their releases on labels like Hanzom Music and Darkside Records, the Vienna-based duo spotlight a more tender side to their production abilities on the new single, with Hall’s spellbinding presence as a topliner shining through the track. Having recently guested on Ram Records subsidiary ProgRAM as well as Skankandbass and Macky Gee’s Down to Earth label, we find the ascendant vocalist in high demand. This is the first time she’s worked with Cranium, although the way her voice gels with their instrumentation, you wouldn’t even know it. Even more surprisingly, the song marks both acts’ Druid Records debut.
“Holding On” begins with a delicate touch, the song’s silky flourishes of piano and scattered white noise FX resulting in a stripped-back introduction. Quickly, however, it builds up to a vibrant climax, with careful amalgamation of swelling basslines, staccato strings and echoing synth leads making for warm and gripping results.
“Holding On” lands on streaming services and digital vendors on 16th January via Druid Records.
With plenty more in the tank for 2021, it looks set to be the Essex-based labels biggest year yet.
