Arriving 7th July via drum and bass authority Cause4Concern Recordings is “Reanimate” / “Mycelium”, a double bill of certified heavy hitters from label co-founder CZA. Serving as the decorated DJ/producer’s first solo release of 2023, it follows on from last year’s well-received “Nightdrive” single, with this pair of new offerings further embracing his dark and direct signature sound.
Rhythmically compelling and anchored on addictive synth motifs, “Reanimate” has been constructed with an audible attention to detail, building from minimal, percussive passages to giddy crescendos designed to keep listeners on their toes without breaking the spell of its hypnotic bassline. Taking stylistic cues from D&B’s formative years while remaining firmly rooted in the present, this roller is prime CZA and, as its title suggests, finds itself in constant motion.
On the metaphorical flip side, “Mycelium” paints an ominous picture from the jump with its disquieting drones and garbled lashings of bass, in contrast to its lighter counterpart. By the drop, volatile breakbeats have come into play, stuttering and stopping unpredictably and making use of atypical drum programming to bring a breath of fresh air to a familiar style. Topped off with spluttering, mechanical synths that yo-yo around the scale with a feverish intensity, it’s an inventive composition, leaning into sci-fi sensibilities to create an immersive listening experience that showcases yet another string to CZA’s bow.
