Modu - King Street EP - Cause4Concern Recordings / C4CDIGUK070

Kicking off the new year for Cause4Concern in style, label regular Modu serves up four new heaters in the form of the King Street EP.

No stranger to the scene, Modu has earned his stripes as one of the West Country’s most devoted beatmakers in recent years, with his decade-strong career including past appearances on Addictive Behaviour and Delta9. His third appearance on C4C to date, King Street serves as the successor to last year’s Toe Tag EP, which impressively amassed tens of thousands of streams following its May release.

Lovingly named after an Avonside street known for its proliferation of pubs, the King Street EP finds the Bristol DJ/producer delving into an array of styles of drum and bass, with each track bringing something different to the table. Opening proceedings is a brand-new VIP mix of his 2020 hit “Bristol Soul”, which retains the original track’s glimmering keys and vocoded vocals before tearing into unexpectedly rapturous drops dominated by thunderous reese basses.

“Bunpa”, which follows, is comparatively cinematic, its hiccupy vocal cuts and swelling, reversed synths segueing into sublime liquid climaxes. “Crane Yard”, which borrows its name from Motion Bristol’s beloved outdoor stage, stands in stark contrast to its predecessor. With daringly jagged basslines slicing through the mix at every turn, it’s a surefire dancefloor damager bound to whet the appetites of those who like their rollers dark and heavy. Last but not least comes “Hypno Shack”, its mesmerising keys building up to oscillating crescendos. Taking a techy turn while simultaneously reminiscent of jump-up in places, it’s a shining example of Modu’s unbridled creativity—there’s really something here for everyone.

The King Street EP is available exclusively via Beatport and Spotify from 7 January, reaching a full range of retailers and streaming services a fortnight later on 21 January 2022.
