After a stellar debut in the form of last autumn’s Bristol Soul EP, West of England talent Modu returns to the coveted Cause4Concern Limited with the three-track project Toe Tag, an immersive exploration of careening and cantankerous drum and bass.
A recent alumnus of both Addictive Behaviour and Lost Recordings, the Bristolian beatmaker has increasingly proven himself to be one of the genre’s finest since emerging on the scene some ten years ago. With airplay on BBC Radio 1Xtra and support from DNB Dojo, Bass Rabbit and InReach Magazine already under his belt, he’s showing all the signs of an artist poised for a monumental 2021, making him a natural candidate for a prompt return to C4C.
First up on the Toe Tag EP is its title track, a bold creation wherein breezy introductory pads and ethereal chimes are soon contrasted with an intoxicating combination of skittering percussion and murmuring, call-and-response basslines, making for a sweltering stepper. Next up, “Lost in Sector 6” plunges listeners into a dark, sprawling abyss, its hushed, echoing topline leading into deep passages of snaking sub-bass and detailed drum work. Last but not least is “Knuckle Jousting”, a clambering foray into guttural sound design accented by choppy hi-hats and looped vocal cuts—showcasing yet another string to the burgeoning DJ/producer’s bow.
The Toe Tag EP lands 31 May exclusively via Beatport and Spotify, hitting a full range of digital outlets two weeks later on 14 Jun 2021.
