#OriginalSin, #Playaz / #Ram affiliate and #EnergizeMuzik / #ProperImage CEO, surprised fans last year with the launch of #EnergizeMusik, a new and prolific sister label to the long-dormant #ImageMuzik. Having already dropped four releases through the new imprint, including the heavyweight compilation #DubplateBangers in July, the versatile drum and bass kingpin now turns his hand to a track from the Image archives for the label’s fifth offering. “#SufferNoFools (Remix)” revisits one of his most popular jump up numbers, originally taken from 2013’s #WeAreYourFriends compilation, updating it with a gleaming mixdown and a 2020 twist.
Emphasising new elements of the track, including its silky introductory chords and cinematic vocal sample, the remix also drastically overhauls the song’s melody line to bring it in keeping with today’s distinctive jump up sound. Screaming staccato synths strike persistently, rapidly ascending and descending, and are interjected by ricocheting, innovatively designed bassline fills to make for a listening experience in equal parts hectic and dancefloor-friendly. Even the song’s transitory passages are boldly reimagined, with the basslines latterly taking on a detuned, almost percussive quality before leading into lush, ambient sections punctuated by shimmering electric keyboard chords.
While the original “#SufferNoFools” stands the test of time and undoubtedly remains on many a DJ’s USB today, this gargantuan reinterpretation offers a much-needed opportunity to bring a gem from the vaults back into the spotlight with a fresh lick of paint to boot.
