Returning to Cause4Concern imprint C4C Limited for the first time since last year’s Between Worlds EP, prolific Austrian drum and bass badman TR Tactics present A Programmed Reality, a five-track exploration of blaring, amped-up future funk.
Coming off the back of a slew of acclaimed releases on Prolix’s Trendkill Records, Black Sun Empire’s Blackout Music NL and Bytecode’s emergent label Code Smell Music among other labels, the new project arrives at a key time for the talented beatmaker.
Commencing the EP is its title track, “A Programmed Reality”, which introduces itself with ambient swells and tentative, dystopian leads before embarking on a dizzying course of ricocheting basslines and charged-up drums. “Poisoned” is a natural follow-up to its predecessor, its skittish, pulsating melodies building up to a tempestuous climax of staccato impacts and off-kilter percussion.
Halfway into the project comes perhaps its darkest offering, “Sinusoids”, its atmospheric soundscape leading into clattering crescendos anchored on garbled basslines and punctuated by thumping snares. Leaving little time for recovery, the ominous, vocal-led “Lethal Demons” continues to apply the pressure, snapping into characteristically brutal drops dominated by fuzzed low-end. Wrapping things up in a big way is “Showdown”, which finds its cinematic flair balancing on a knife-edge with unrelenting bassweight—resulting in a textbook TR Tactics cut and a worthy finale to a landmark EP.
