Various Artists - Alpha Cuts Volume 1 - Protocode / PRTCD017

Cruising into 2021 in style, burgeoning Australian drum and bass institution ProtoCode Music has hand-picked seven all-new heaters to make up their first release of the year, the compilation EP Alpha Cuts Volume 1.

Alongside stellar appearances from label regulars like fast-rising Adelaide duo V O E and intercontinental affiliates Xeomi and Kaiza, the project also features the label debuts from a number of fresh faces including Pittsburgh producer Dropset and Auckland neuro specialist Intercept, whose respective appearances on Cause4Concern and Neuropunk in recent months have marked them out as ones to watch for 2021. Their contributions to this EP should further reinforce this, with Dropset teaming up with ProtoCode favourite Dead Zodiac for the garbled neurofunk belter “Technology” and Intercept bringing the fissured stepper “Kaonashi” to the table.

Elsewhere, ProtoCode mainstay Cryptic State teams up with London innovator MVMMOTH on “Break the Pedal”, a warped weapon which pairs mashed-up sound design with ethereal vocal drones to make for one-of-a-kind results. Meanwhile, fellow signee Against Odds – who hails from ProtoCode’s hometown of Perth – opts for a more dancefloor-friendly sound on “The Beginning” than listeners would have come to expect from his past releases on the label, and local newcomer Jenske serves up a barbed, growling closer in the form of “Ignition”, making his first appearance on the label an unforgettable one. Alpha Cuts Volume 1 lands 12 February via streaming services.
