Now firmly established as one of the Cause4Concern roster’s go-to acts, Volatile Cycle (or VC for short) have made innumerable strides in the scene since first linking up with the iconic drum and bass label back in 2018. This winter, they’re back for more, calling upon American talent Dropset and Italian two-piece Shadow Sect for assistance over the course of their new release “Disgruntled”.
With a back catalogue spanning foundational labels like Renegade Hardware and Noisia’s Invisible Recordings as well as more recently established D&B powerhouses including Skankandbass and MethLab Recordings, VC are an indisputably important part of the future funk scene today. Known for their grungy soundscapes and rhythmic precision, the Norwich duo have already amassed hundreds of thousands of streams on their past works, earning praise from fabric and Drum&BassArena among other industry-leading tastemakers.
“Disgruntled”, the first of their two new cuts, finds the pair reconnecting with Pittsburgh’s Dropset, with whom they’ve previously joined forces for the warmly received tracks “Descent” and “Hoodrat”. The new collaboration picks up where they left off, its thunderous low frequencies and accented synth stabs laying the perfect groundwork for gritty, swaggering climaxes. “Desire”, sees Shadow Sect, the European production crew formed of WPL and The Anunnaki, on co-production duties. With each of the four producers drawing on their rich musical influences, it’s a team-up of epic proportions—more soundtrack-inclined than its predecessor, with its breathy, atmospheric vocals underscored by forward-thinking future funk basslines, this is VC at their finest.
